TROUSER TAPERING FULHAM

Open 7 Days | Same-Day Available | Free Collection & Delivery

A lot of people in Fulham have trousers that fit well at the waist but are too wide in the leg. Maybe the style feels dated. Maybe off-the-rack sizing just does not suit a slimmer build. Maybe you bought a pair online and the leg is baggier than the photos suggested. Trouser tapering fixes all of that. We take in the leg from below the thigh to the hem, creating a progressively narrower fit that works with your body rather than against it. As part of our clothing alteration service in Fulham, we taper suit trousers, chinos, jeans, and casual trousers at our shop on Fulham Road. Drop in any day of the week or book a free collection.

What Does It Mean to Have Trousers Tapered?

Tapering trousers means taking in the leg to create a progressively narrower fit from the thigh down to the hem. A tailor removes fabric from the inseam, outseam, or both sides of each leg so the trouser sits closer to the body below the knee. The waist and seat are left completely untouched.

This is different from simply taking in trousers, which reduces the width evenly along the whole leg. Tapering creates a gradual narrowing — wider at the top, slimmer at the ankle — which is how most well-cut slim-fit trousers are designed.

The result is a trouser that fits the way it was always supposed to. Same waist, same seat, slimmer leg.

What Trouser Tapering Involves

Before we cut anything, we talk through exactly what you want and pin the trousers to the right shape while you have them on. This is the most important part of a tapering job — getting the taper right means understanding how the trouser currently fits and where the excess fabric is.

Where we taper from. We work from the inseam, the outseam, or both, depending on the cut of the trouser and how much needs to come in.

  • Inseam only works well when the excess fabric is mostly on the inner leg

  • Outseam only is used when the side seam needs to move — though this is less common and affects the trouser crease position

  • Both seams gives the most balanced result for larger reductions — spreading the change across both sides keeps the fabric sitting naturally

Effect on the original drape and crease.

A well-executed taper should not ruin the drape of the trouser. The fabric falls from the same point it always did — only the leg opening and lower leg width change. On suit trousers with a pressed crease, we re-press the crease after tapering so it sits cleanly at the new width.

Which Trousers Can Be Tapered in Fulham

We taper most trouser types. Here is how we approach the common ones.

  • Suit trousers. These are the tapering job we see most from Fulham professionals. A classic suit trouser cut from five or ten years ago is often noticeably wider in the leg than what looks current today. We taper these carefully, preserving the structure of the fabric and re-pressing the crease after. If you want your suit dry cleaning done at the same time, we can handle both in the same visit.

  • Chinos and smart casual trousers. Straightforward to taper. Chinos respond well because the fabric is manageable and the seams are clean to work with. This is one of our most common alteration requests.

  • Jeans. Denim is thicker than suit fabric and takes more time to taper cleanly. We can do it, but we assess the weight of the denim first. Very heavy denim may have limits on how far it can be taken in before the seams become too thick to finish neatly.

  • Pleated trousers. The pleat at the top of the leg stays untouched. We taper from the knee down, which slims the lower leg without changing the silhouette above. This works well and keeps the pleat sitting as it should.

  • Wide-leg trousers. These can be tapered significantly, but very wide cuts have a natural limit. Taking a wide-leg trouser to a very slim fit changes the proportions in ways that can look wrong. We will tell you what the realistic options are before we start.

  • What we cannot easily taper. Trousers with very little seam allowance — particularly some fast-fashion pairs — may not leave enough fabric to work with after tapering. Heavily bonded or fused fabrics can also be difficult to alter cleanly. Bring them in and we will check before committing.

How Much Can Trousers Be Tapered Without Ruining the Fit

This is the question we get most often, and the honest answer is: it depends on the trouser — but there are clear guidelines.

For most trousers, taking in up to 2 to 3cm per side works comfortably. This gives a noticeably slimmer result without putting stress on the seams or distorting the drape. Spreading the reduction across both seams — rather than taking everything from one side — gives the cleanest outcome.

Beyond 3cm per side, things get more complicated. The fabric starts to pull differently at the thigh, the seat may start to look tighter than it is, and the original drape of the trouser changes. It is not impossible, but it needs careful assessment first.

On leg opening width. There is no single right answer for ideal leg opening — it depends on your build, the trouser style, and what you are wearing them with. Slim-fit suit trousers typically have a leg opening of around 17 to 19cm. Very slim trousers go to 16cm or less. We pin the trousers to the width that looks right for your proportions and show you the result before we cut.

We assess every pair before we start. If the taper you want is not achievable without compromising the fit, we tell you upfront.

Can Lined and Pleated Trousers Be Tapered

Yes — both can be tapered, but they each need a specific approach.

  • Lined trousers. The lining sits inside the leg and has to be taken in alongside the outer fabric. If only the outer fabric is tapered and the lining is left wide, the lining bunches inside the leg and the trouser feels uncomfortable. We taper both layers in proportion so the finished result sits cleanly from the outside and feels right when you wear it.

  • Pleated trousers. The pleat at the front of the trouser — whether single or double pleat — should stay untouched. The pleat is part of how the trouser sits at the hip and thigh. We taper from the knee down, creating a slimmer lower leg while leaving the pleat area as it was. This is the right approach for most pleated trousers and gives a balanced result.

  • Pressing after tapering. On suit trousers with a front crease, we re-press the crease after the taper is complete. The crease follows the new line of the leg. Done well, you cannot tell the trouser was ever different.

If you also need trouser dry cleaning alongside the alteration, we combine both in a single visit.

How Long Trouser Tapering Takes in Fulham

Standard turnaround for trouser tapering is 24 to 48 hours. Most pairs dropped off in the morning are ready the following day.

Lined trousers take a little longer — both layers need tapering and pressing. Allow 48 hours for these.

Same-day tapering. If you have an event, an interview, or travel coming up, drop the trousers off as early as possible and ask when you come in. We do our best to accommodate urgent requests when the workload allows.

Drop off at our shop. We are at 484 Fulham Road, a short walk from Fulham Broadway station:

  • Monday to Friday: 7:30 to 19:30

  • Saturday: 9:00 to 18:00

  • Sunday: 10:00 to 16:00

We recommend coming in for tapering so we can pin the fit while you are wearing the trousers. This gives the most accurate result and avoids any back-and-forth if the width needs adjusting. If you have other items for dry cleaning or laundry, bring them along and we will take everything at once.

Is It Worth Tapering Trousers or Buying a New Pair

Almost always worth it. Here is the straightforward version.

A good pair of suit trousers, tailored chinos, or quality denim costs far more than a tapering job. If the waist fits, the seat fits, and the only problem is that the leg is too wide, you already have most of what makes a trouser work. Tapering fixes the one thing that is wrong.

A new pair of slim-cut trousers from a shop may not fit at the waist or seat. You would be solving one problem and creating two others.

For Fulham professionals with a wardrobe of quality pieces, tapering older suit trousers to a more contemporary fit is one of the best-value alterations there is. A well-tapered pair that you already own looks better than a new pair that does not fit your body.

When it might not be worth it. If the trousers are very cheap, the fabric is already worn through at the seams, or the amount of tapering needed is so large it would change the character of the trouser entirely, that is worth talking through honestly. We would rather give you a straight answer than take your money for a result you will not be happy with.

If the trousers also need shortening, our trouser shortening service can be done at the same time as the taper in a single visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is trouser tapering and how is it different from taking in trousers?

Tapering creates a gradual narrowing from the thigh down to the hem. Taking in reduces the width evenly along the whole leg. Tapering gives a slimmer lower leg while keeping the fit at the thigh and knee more relaxed.

Can you taper lined suit trousers in Fulham?

Yes. We taper the outer fabric and lining in proportion and re-press the crease after. The finished result is clean inside and out.

How much can trousers be tapered before the fit is affected?

Up to 2 to 3cm per side works well for most trousers. We assess each pair and advise before cutting. Spreading the reduction across both seams gives the cleanest result.

How long does trouser tapering take?

Standard turnaround is 24 to 48 hours. Lined trousers allow 48 hours. Same-day is often available on request.

Can pleated trousers be tapered?

Yes. We taper from below the knee, leaving the pleat area untouched. This slims the lower leg without changing the silhouette above.

Do you collect trousers for tapering from homes in Fulham?

For tapering, we recommend dropping in so we can pin the fit accurately while you are wearing the trousers. Our laundry pickup and delivery is available for dry cleaning and laundry orders.
