Dress Shortening Fulham
Open 7 Days | Same-Day Available | Free Collection & Delivery
Getting a dress hemmed sounds simple — it's one of the most common jobs in our clothing alteration service in Fulham, which covers everything from trouser tapering to zip replacement. And sometimes it is. But there's a version of this job that's considerably more involved than most people expect, and the difference between a hem done well and one done quickly is something you notice every time you wear the garment.
We do a lot of dress shortening at Blue Moon Dry Cleaners. Our shop is on Fulham Road, and we've been handling alteration work here long enough to have dealt with pretty much every fabric, every hem style, and every customer situation — from the person who bought something off the rail that's two inches too long, to the one who ordered a bridesmaid dress online and only noticed the length problem three days before the wedding.
Both are fine. We've seen worse. The point is, we can usually help.
Why Dress Length Matters More Than People Think
There's a reason tailors spend so much time talking about hem length. It's not fussiness — it's proportion. A dress that hits at the wrong point on your leg changes how the whole garment looks and moves. Too long and it can drag, making you look shorter than you are. Too short and you lose the elegance that made you want the dress in the first place.
The other thing about hem length is that it's very personal. For skirts specifically, our skirt shortening service in Fulham covers A-line, pleated, pencil and wrap styles. What looks right on a model at 5'10" is not going to sit the same way on someone who's 5'4". And yet most ready-to-wear clothing is cut for a standard height that doesn't actually fit most people who buy it. This is why dress shortening is one of the most common alteration requests we handle — it's not a niche job, it's something a significant proportion of people need for almost any formal or semi-formal garment they buy.
What Dress Shortening Involves
At its most straightforward, shortening a dress means removing fabric from the hem, then finishing the new edge so it hangs cleanly. But the details matter.
The hem finish needs to match the original — or at least be appropriate for the fabric. A silk dress with a rolled hem needs a different approach than a structured midi dress with a wide turned hem. Layered fabrics need to be shortened with each layer considered separately. Dresses with embellishment at the hem — lace edging, beading, decorative stitching — need special care because you're either working around that detail or repositioning it.
Some of the specific situations we handle regularly:
Standard hem shortening — removing a fixed amount from the hem and finishing cleanly. This is the most common version of the job and works well on straight or A-line cuts in most fabrics.
Layered and tiered dresses — each layer is separate, which means the shortening process takes considerably longer. We work through them one at a time to make sure the proportions between layers stay right.
Asymmetric hems — these require a careful eye. The hem line is intentionally uneven, so shortening while maintaining that asymmetry involves more pinning and fitting than a standard job.
Dresses with hem embellishment — lace trim, beaded borders, embroidered edges. Depending on how they're attached and what they're made of, we can sometimes detach and reattach the trim at the new length. We'll tell you upfront if it's not feasible.
Formal and bridal wear — these get extra attention. If the dress also needs cleaning after shortening, our dress dry cleaning service handles both in one visit. The fabrics involved are often delicate, the construction is more complex, and the stakes are higher. We treat these jobs accordingly.
Lining adjustment — if the dress has a lining, the lining needs to be shortened as well. For evening dresses and heavily embellished gowns, our evening dress cleaning service handles cleaning and finishing with the care these pieces need, at a slightly different length to allow proper movement. This is a step that gets skipped by less careful alterations, and it shows in how the dress hangs.
The Fitting Process
This is worth mentioning because it's something people sometimes want to skip, and skipping it is usually a mistake.
For a dress shortening to look right, it needs to be pinned while you're wearing it — in the shoes you'll wear with it, ideally. The reason is simple: heel height changes everything. A dress that grazes the floor in flat shoes might sit three inches above it in heels. Getting the length right at home, on a flat surface, often results in a hem that ends up too short once you're actually wearing the dress as intended.
When you bring a dress in for shortening, we'll ask about the shoes. If you can bring them with you, even better. We do the pinning properly, we measure, and we confirm the length with you before we cut anything. That last part matters — once fabric is removed, it's gone.
Turnaround and Pricing
Dress shortening at Blue Moon starts from £20–£25 for a straightforward single-layer hem. More complex work — layered fabrics, linings, embellishment, formal wear — is priced based on what the job actually involves, and we'll give you that figure after we've looked at the garment.
Standard turnaround is three to five working days. If you have a specific deadline — a wedding, an event, something you need by Saturday — tell us when you drop it off and we'll do our best to accommodate.
No appointment needed to drop items off. You'll find us at 484 Fulham Road, London SW6 5NH, open Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 7:30pm, Saturday from 9am to 6pm, and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. We're easy to get to from Parsons Green, Sands End, Chelsea and the surrounding parts of SW6 and SW10.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
We won't shorten a dress without pinning it first. If there are other minor issues alongside — a loose button, a pulled thread, a fraying seam — our small clothing repairs service sorts those at the same time. If you bring something in and ask us to take off three inches without a fitting, we'll strongly suggest you let us check the length properly. It's not about being difficult — it's that three inches off one dress can look completely different to three inches off another, depending on the cut and where the original hem sat.
We also won't promise an invisible finish on every fabric. Most cottons, jersey, and structured fabrics hem beautifully. Very sheer fabrics, certain embellished weaves, and heavily textured materials sometimes require a visible stitch — we'll always tell you what to expect before we start.
And if you're not sure whether the dress needs shortening or whether something else is off with the fit — the waist, the bust, the shoulders — bring it in and we'll look at it. Sometimes the length looks wrong because something else isn't sitting right, and shortening it would actually make the problem worse.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to shorten a dress in Fulham?
Our dress shortening starts from around £20–£25 for a straightforward single-layer hem. Layered dresses, linings, embellishment and formal fabrics cost more because the job takes longer. We'll give you an accurate quote once we've seen the garment.
Do I need to bring the shoes I'll wear with the dress?
Yes, if at all possible. Heel height changes the effective length of a dress significantly. We pin hems with the shoes on to make sure the final length is actually right for how you'll wear it.
Can you shorten a dress with a lace hem?
It depends on how the lace is attached and how much needs to come off. In some cases we can detach and reattach the lace trim at the new length. We'll look at it and give you an honest answer about what's achievable.
How long does dress shortening take?
Usually three to five working days. If you have a deadline — a wedding or an event — let us know when you drop it off and we'll see what we can do.
Can you shorten a wedding dress or bridesmaid dress?
Yes. Bridal and formalwear is something we handle regularly. These jobs take more time and care, and are priced accordingly, but we have experience with the fabrics and construction involved.
What if I want the dress shortened but I'm not sure by how much?
That's exactly what the fitting is for. We'll pin it to different lengths while you're wearing it and help you find what looks right. You don't need to come in with a measurement — that's our job.
