PILLOW CLEANING FULHAM
Free Collection & Delivery | Down, Synthetic & Decorative | Open 7 Days
Most people in Fulham replace their pillows when they go yellow or start to smell. What they do not know is that a professional clean can fix both of those things and add years to the pillow's life. Pillows absorb more sweat, body oil, and dead skin than almost any other item in the bedroom — and a pillowcase does not stop that from soaking through into the filling. Our pillow cleaning service in Fulham uses the right method for each fill type, whether that is a down pillow, a synthetic hollowfibre, or a decorative throw pillow. Drop yours at our shop on Fulham Road or book a free collection from your door. As part of our full laundry service in Fulham, we have been caring for bedding and fabrics in Fulham for over 30 years.
How Often Should Pillows Be Professionally Cleaned?
Pillows should be professionally cleaned at least twice a year. If you have allergies or asthma, every three to four months is better.
Sweat and body oils soak into the filling every night, even through a pillowcase
Dust mites accumulate in pillows faster than in most other bedding
Regular cleaning extends pillow life and keeps your sleep environment hygienic
A pillowcase protects against surface dirt but does nothing for what builds up inside the filling over months of use. The only way to properly clean a pillow is to clean the whole thing — cover and fill together.
Which Pillows We Clean and How We Treat Each Fill Type
Every pillow that comes through our door gets checked before we decide how to clean it. We look at the care label first. If there is no label, we assess the material by hand.
Down and feather pillows. These are the ones that need the most care. Water and heat can cause the clusters to clump together and lose their loft — the lightness and fluffiness that makes a good down pillow worth having. We dry clean down and feather pillows so the filling stays intact. The solvent cleans without soaking the clusters, and the pillow comes back as plump and soft as it should be.
Synthetic hollowfibre pillows. These handle water better than natural fillings. We launder them in a suitable machine at the right temperature, then dry them fully. The key with synthetic pillows is getting them completely dry — if any moisture stays in the filling, the pillow starts to smell within days. We do not rush the drying.
Memory foam pillows. Memory foam cannot be machine washed or dry cleaned. Water breaks down the foam structure from the inside, and solvent does the same. If you bring us a memory foam pillow, we will be straight with you — it is not something we can put through our standard process. We can advise on safe surface cleaning options, but the best approach is to follow the manufacturer's care guide.
Decorative and embellished throw pillows. These often have beading, embroidery, silk covers, or structured shapes that would be ruined by water. We dry clean these carefully, treating any decorative elements with extra attention. For silk-covered cushions, we apply the same approach as our specialist dry cleaning for delicate garments.
What happens if you wash a dry-clean-only pillow at home. The filling clumps. The cover shrinks. If it does not dry fully — which is almost guaranteed with a thick pillow in a home tumble dryer — you get mould growing in the filling within a few days. Bring it to us before it goes in the machine.
If you are also cleaning your duvet at the same time, our duvet cleaning service can be booked alongside your pillow order.
How We Remove Yellow Stains From Pillows
Yellow pillows are one of the most common things we see at our Fulham shop. The yellowing comes from sweat and body oils soaking through the pillowcase into the cover fabric over months of use. It is not a sign the pillow is ruined — it is a sign it needs a proper clean.
We do not just run a yellowed pillow through a standard cycle. Here is how we handle it.
Pre-treatment. Every pillow is checked when it comes in. Yellowed areas get a targeted treatment applied directly to the stained fabric before anything else. The right pre-treatment product for the fabric type breaks down the sweat and oil residue that caused the yellowing.
The wash. For synthetic pillows, we launder at a temperature that is hot enough to lift the yellowing but safe for the filling. For down pillows, the dry cleaning solvent pulls the yellowing out of the cover without wetting the filling inside.
Badly set yellowing. If a pillow has been yellow for a long time — or has been through a home machine without improving — the staining may be deeper set. We may recommend our stain removal service for hands-on treatment before the main clean. We will tell you upfront what result to expect.
Signs Your Pillow Needs Cleaning Rather Than Just Airing Out
Putting a pillow on the windowsill for an afternoon does very little. Airing removes surface moisture and freshens the cover slightly. It does nothing for the build-up inside the filling. Here are the signs that your pillow actually needs a professional clean:
Yellow staining. Visible through or on the cover fabric — caused by sweat and oils soaking into the material.
Persistent odour. If the pillow still smells after airing for a full day, the source is inside the filling. Airing will not fix it.
Waking up with allergy symptoms. Blocked nose, itchy eyes, or sneezing when you wake up can be a sign of dust mites in your pillow. Your pillowcase is not a barrier against them.
Lumpy or uneven filling. Filling that has shifted and clumped often improves after professional cleaning and proper drying. The process re-opens the clusters and redistributes the fill.
It has been over six months. Even if the pillow looks fine, six months of nightly use means a significant build-up inside. You just cannot see it.
In Fulham flats with limited airflow and central heating running most of the year, pillows hold moisture longer. That accelerates the build-up of everything listed above.
How We Remove Dust Mites and Allergens From Pillows
Pillows are one of the worst places for dust mites in the bedroom. You spend eight hours a night with your face directly on the pillow. The warmth and moisture from your body create exactly the conditions dust mites need to multiply. 1
A pillowcase washed at 60°C keeps the surface clean, but the mites in the filling are untouched.
For down and feather pillows, we dry clean using a solvent process that kills dust mites and removes allergens from the filling. The dry cleaning method reaches inside the filling where water and washing cannot.
For synthetic pillows, we launder at 60°C or above where the filling allows. That temperature kills dust mites and removes their waste — the main allergen trigger — from the hollowfibre.
For decorative pillows that cannot withstand heat, the dry cleaning solvent process still removes the allergens effectively.
If you have allergies or asthma, getting your sleeping pillows cleaned every three to four months makes a measurable difference. We also offer eco-friendly dry cleaning for customers who prefer a gentler solvent for their down or feather pillows.
When to Clean vs. When to Replace a Pillow
This is a question worth asking honestly. Not every pillow is worth cleaning. Here is how we think about it.
Clean it if:
It has yellowing or odour but still holds its shape and support
The filling is slightly lumpy but not broken down
It is a quality down or feather pillow less than five years old
It is a decorative pillow with sentimental or monetary value
Replace it if:
The filling has permanently clumped and does not redistribute after cleaning
The pillow no longer provides proper neck and head support
It is a synthetic pillow more than two to three years old
It has developed mould inside the filling — this cannot be fully removed
A good quality down pillow properly cared for can last five to ten years. Regular professional cleaning is part of that care. A cheap synthetic pillow bought a few years ago is probably not worth the cleaning cost — a new one makes more sense.
When you bring your pillows in, we give you a straight answer. If cleaning is not going to make a meaningful difference, we will tell you rather than take your money.
You can combine a pillow drop-off with our bedding wash and press service if you want sheets and pillowcases done at the same time.
Turnaround Time and How to Get Your Pillows Cleaned in Fulham
Most pillows are ready within 48 to 72 hours. Down and feather pillows take a little longer because they need to dry slowly and fully before we return them. Rushing the drying on a down pillow leaves moisture in the clusters, which causes mould. We do not cut that corner.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you clean memory foam pillows in Fulham?
Memory foam cannot be machine washed or dry cleaned — water and solvent both damage the foam structure. We can advise on safe surface cleaning, but memory foam pillows are best maintained following the manufacturer's care guide.
How do you remove yellow stains from pillows?
We pre-treat yellowed areas before cleaning. The right product breaks down sweat and body oil residue in the cover fabric. Most yellowing lifts fully with professional pre-treatment and the correct cleaning method.
Do you collect pillows from my home in Fulham?
Yes. Free collection and delivery across Fulham, Parsons Green, Chelsea, and nearby areas. Book online or call +44 20 7386 8545.
Can professional cleaning remove dust mites from pillows?
Yes. Dry cleaning removes dust mites from down and feather pillows. High-temperature laundering does the same for synthetic pillows. Both methods remove the allergens that cause reactions during sleep.
How long does pillow cleaning take?
Most pillows are ready in 48 to 72 hours. Down pillows may take a little longer to dry fully and safely.
How do I know if my pillow needs cleaning or replacing?
Yellowing, odour, and mild lumpiness are signs that cleaning will help. Broken support, permanent clumping, and mould inside the filling usually mean it is time for a new pillow. We give you an honest assessment when you bring it in.
