Curtain Cleaning Fulham
Open 7 Days | Same-Day Available | Free Collection & Delivery
Curtains are one of those things people clean less often than they should, mainly because getting them down, cleaned and back up again is enough of a project that it's easy to keep putting off. And then one day you take them down for another reason and realise quite how much dust, cooking residue and general household grime a pair of curtains can quietly accumulate over a couple of years.
The other reason people delay is the genuine risk involved in cleaning curtains at home. Shrinkage is the most common disaster — curtains that came down touching the floor and went back up three inches short. But colour run, damaged linings, flattened velvet pile and distorted heading tape are all things we see regularly as a consequence of home cleaning attempts that didn't go well.
Curtain cleaning in Fulham is something we handle carefully at Blue Moon Dry Cleaners on Fulham Road. We assess the fabric, the construction and the care requirements of each set before deciding on the appropriate cleaning method. The goal is always to return curtains in better condition than they arrived — clean, pressed, and ready to rehang.
Why Curtains Need Professional Cleaning
What Curtains Actually Collect
Curtains do a lot of quiet work in a room. They filter light, reduce drafts, and absorb a continuous stream of airborne particles — dust, cooking vapours, pet dander, smoke, pollen. Over time this builds up in the fabric in a way that's not always visually obvious until you hold the curtain up to daylight or run a hand across it and notice what comes off.
In rooms where windows are regularly opened, curtains also collect environmental pollutants from outside. In kitchens and dining areas, grease and cooking residue penetrate the fabric gradually. In bedrooms, they collect the same airborne particles as bedding. None of this is dramatic — it's just normal household accumulation — but it builds, and curtains that haven't been cleaned in two or three years are typically holding considerably more than most people would expect.
The Risk of Cleaning Curtains at Home
The main problem with washing curtains at home is that most curtain fabrics aren't as stable in a domestic washing machine as the care label might suggest. Even fabrics labelled as washable can shrink when the heading tape, lining and outer fabric all behave slightly differently at the same temperature. Linings shrink at different rates to face fabrics. Interlinings add another variable.
Beyond shrinkage, velvet curtains lose their pile in a domestic wash. Silk and silk-effect fabrics water-spot and lose their lustre. Heavily lined curtains can take days to dry at home, and damp fabric left to dry slowly often develops a musty smell that's worse than what you started with.
We've had many curtains come to us after a home washing attempt that didn't go as planned. Some we can improve. Some are beyond recovery. The cost of professional curtain cleaning is usually considerably less than replacing curtains that have been damaged at home.
What We Clean and How
Fabric Types
We work with all standard curtain fabrics — cotton, linen, polyester, velvet, silk and silk-effect fabrics, wool blends, and blackout-lined curtains. Each has its own tolerances and its own cleaning requirements.
Velvet curtains need particular care. The pile must be protected throughout the cleaning process and correctly finished afterwards — velvet that's been crushed or incorrectly pressed is immediately obvious, and it doesn't recover easily.
Silk and silk-effect fabrics are sensitive to water and heat. We use dry cleaning methods for these where appropriate, and we handle them carefully throughout.
Blackout curtains have a rubberised or coated lining that requires specific treatment. Standard washing methods can cause the coating to crack, bubble or peel — we clean these in a way that preserves the blackout lining's integrity.
Lined and Unlined Curtains
Lined curtains are more complex to clean than unlined because the lining and face fabric need to be treated consistently — the same method, the same temperature — to prevent differential shrinkage. We assess lined curtains carefully before deciding on an approach.
Interlining — a thick fabric layer between the face and the lining used in heavier, more formal curtains — adds another consideration. Interlined curtains are usually dry cleaned rather than wet cleaned, as the interlining responds poorly to water.
Heading Tape and Construction
The heading tape — the strip at the top of the curtain that holds the hooks or rings and creates the pleat structure — can be distorted or damaged by high temperatures or aggressive washing. A distorted heading tape means the curtain won't hang correctly even if the fabric itself is fine. We take care to protect heading tape through the cleaning process.
Curtain Cleaning Process at Blue Moon
When curtains come in for cleaning, we start by checking the care labels and the fabric. We assess the construction — lined or unlined, the type of heading, any embellishment or special features — and decide on the appropriate method.
Most curtains are dry cleaned, which gives the most controlled result and the lowest risk of shrinkage or colour change. Some washable curtains in stable fabrics are wet cleaned where it's appropriate. We'll tell you which method we're using and why.
After cleaning, curtains are carefully pressed and finished before being returned. Velvet curtains are steamed and finished in the direction of the pile. Other fabrics are pressed according to what they need.
Practical Information
Do I Need to Take Curtains Down Myself?
Yes — we don't offer a collection and rehang service, so you'll need to take the curtains down before bringing them in. When you take them down, note the hook positions and how the heading tape is gathered — this makes it easier to rehang them exactly as they were.
How to Bring Curtains In
Fold them loosely rather than bundling them tightly, which can set creases into the fabric. If you have multiple pairs, keep them separate and labelled so we can return the right curtains to the right windows.
Turnaround
Most curtain cleaning is completed within five to seven working days. Larger or more complex pairs may take a little longer. If you have a specific deadline — guests arriving, a room being redecorated — let us know when you drop them off.
Pricing
Curtain cleaning is priced by the pair based on the size of the curtains, the fabric type and the cleaning method required. We'll give you a clear quote when you bring them in. There are no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should curtains be professionally cleaned?
Once every one to two years is a reasonable guideline for most rooms. Curtains in kitchens, rooms where people smoke, or homes with pets may benefit from more frequent cleaning. Bedroom curtains tend to accumulate less than living room or kitchen curtains.
Can velvet curtains be dry cleaned?
Yes, and dry cleaning is usually the preferred method for velvet. The pile needs to be protected throughout and carefully finished afterwards. We handle velvet curtains regularly and know what they need.
Will my curtains shrink?
Shrinkage is the risk we work to avoid. We assess each set carefully and choose the cleaning method that gives the most controlled result. Dry cleaning carries the lowest shrinkage risk for most curtain fabrics. We'll tell you our recommended approach before we start.
Do you clean blackout curtains?
Yes. Blackout curtains have a coated lining that needs specific care — standard washing methods can damage the coating. We clean blackout curtains using a method that preserves the lining's integrity.
Can you clean curtains with embellishment — beading, trim, tassels?
It depends on the specific embellishment and how it's attached. Bring them in and we'll assess whether they can be cleaned safely and advise on any risks.
My curtains have a musty smell — can that be removed?
Yes, in most cases. Musty odours are usually caused by damp storage or slow drying, and professional cleaning removes both the source of the odour and the smell itself. If there's an underlying mould issue, we'll flag it when we look at the curtains.
Do you clean curtains from anywhere in Fulham?
Yes — we serve customers from across Fulham, Parsons Green, Sands End, Chelsea, Earl's Court, Hammersmith and the surrounding areas. Most customers bring curtains in directly to our shop on Fulham Road.
