Cushion Cover Cleaning Fulham

Cushion covers tend to fall into a category of household textiles that people mean to get cleaned but never quite prioritise. They're not as visually obvious as curtains when they need attention, they don't go through the same regular laundering cycle as bedding, and getting them off the cushions, cleaned, and back on again is just enough of a task that it keeps getting postponed.
The result is that most cushion covers in regular use are holding considerably more than they appear to be — dust, body oils, pet hair, cooking vapours, and in some cases the residue of spills that were wiped rather than fully cleaned. On darker fabrics this is easy to miss until the cushion is next to a clean version of itself. On lighter fabrics it often shows up as a general dullness that you stop noticing because it changes gradually.
Cushion cover cleaning in Fulham is something we handle at Blue Moon Dry Cleaners on Fulham Road, and it's work that requires more thought than most people expect. The range of fabrics used in cushion covers is considerable, and the wrong cleaning method can cause real damage — shrinkage, colour loss, distorted shape, flattened pile on velvet, or water marks on silk. We assess each cover individually and clean it appropriately.
Why Cushion Covers Need Professional Cleaning
What They Actually Collect
Cushions in daily use accumulate the same airborne particles as any soft furnishing — dust, pollen, pet dander — alongside the more direct contact they get from being sat against, leant on, and handled. Body oils transfer from skin and hair onto fabric over time, which attracts further dirt and gradually dulls the surface. In households with pets, fur and dander work their way into the fibres in a way that vacuuming addresses only partially.
Spills are their own category. Even spills that are cleaned up promptly often leave residue in the fabric that isn't visible immediately but becomes apparent later, or that only shows up properly under certain light conditions. A professional clean removes the residue as well as any visible mark.
The Risk of Home Washing
The temptation with cushion covers is to remove them and put them in a domestic washing machine. Some covers handle this without issue. Many don't, and the problems that result are familiar to anyone who's experienced them.
Shrinkage is the most common outcome — the cover comes out slightly smaller than the cushion pad it needs to fit, which leaves it either too tight, or visibly distorted when it's back on. This happens when the fabric and any lining or interfacing shrink at different rates, or when the fabric itself is less dimensionally stable than the care label implies.
Velvet cushion covers lose their pile structure in a domestic wash. The result is a surface that looks crushed, matted, or uneven, and this isn't easily reversed. Silk and silk-effect covers water-spot. Embroidered or beaded covers risk thread damage or bead loss. Covers with concealed zips or piped edges can come out misshapen.
We see the aftermath of these home washing attempts regularly. In many cases we can improve things. In some, the damage is already set.
What We Clean
Fabric Types
We clean cushion covers in all standard and specialist fabrics — cotton, linen, polyester blends, velvet, silk, wool, boucle, chenille, jacquard weaves and embroidered fabrics. Each fabric type has its own requirements, and we adjust our approach accordingly.
Velvet Cushion Covers
Velvet needs particular care throughout the cleaning process. The pile is fragile and directional — clean it against the pile and the surface looks wrong. Handle it under too much pressure and the pile compresses in a way that doesn't recover. We clean velvet cushion covers using methods that protect the pile throughout, and finish them carefully so the surface looks right.
Silk and Silk-Effect Covers
Silk is sensitive to water, heat and agitation. Wet cleaning silk cushion covers in a domestic machine risks water-spotting, colour shift and fabric distortion. We dry clean silk and silk-effect covers where this is the appropriate method, handling them carefully throughout.
Embroidered and Embellished Covers
Cushion covers with embroidery, beading, appliqué or other surface decoration need individual assessment. The concern is both the embellishment itself — beads and sequins that aren't securely attached can be damaged or lost, and embroidery threads can pull — and the base fabric, which may have different requirements to a plain cover of the same material.
We'll look at embellished covers carefully and advise on the best approach before starting any work.
Covers With Piping, Tassels and Trim
Piped edges, tassel trim, fringe and similar details are common on more decorative cushion covers and require care during cleaning to prevent the trim distorting or the piping pulling away from the seam. We handle these details properly rather than treating the whole cover as a flat fabric item.
The Cleaning Process
Every cushion cover starts with an assessment — fabric type, construction, any embellishment, the care label, and the overall condition. We check for staining and any pre-existing damage before deciding on the cleaning method.
Most decorative cushion covers in delicate fabrics are dry cleaned, which gives the most controlled result and the lowest risk of shrinkage or colour change. More robust covers in stable fabrics may be wet cleaned where appropriate. We'll tell you which approach we're using and why.
After cleaning, covers are carefully pressed and finished according to what the fabric needs. Velvet is steamed and finished in the direction of the pile. Other fabrics are pressed at the appropriate temperature and method. Covers are returned clean, pressed and ready to go back on.
Practical Information
How Many Covers at Once
There's no minimum. We regularly clean single covers brought in on their own, as well as full sets from a sofa, a bedroom or a living room refresh. If you're bringing in a large number, keep them loosely grouped and labelled if they belong to different rooms or sets.
Removing Covers Before Bringing Them In
Remove covers from the cushion pads before bringing them in — we clean the covers themselves, not the pads. Most covers zip off cleanly. If you have covers that are more difficult to remove, do this before you come in rather than leaving them on the pad.
Pricing and Turnaround
Cushion cover cleaning is priced per cover based on the fabric type and any embellishment or special handling required. We'll give you a clear quote when you bring them in — no surprises.
Standard turnaround is three to five working days. If you need them back by a specific date, let us know when you drop them off.
No appointment needed. Drop in at 484 Fulham Road, London SW6 5NH. We're open Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:30pm, Saturday 9am to 6pm, and Sunday 10am to 4pm. Call us on +44 20 7386 8545 or visit bluemoondrycleaners.co.uk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can velvet cushion covers be dry cleaned?
Yes — and dry cleaning is usually the correct method for velvet. The pile needs to be protected throughout the process and carefully finished afterwards. We handle velvet cushion covers regularly.
Will my cushion covers shrink?
Shrinkage is what we're working to prevent. We assess each cover carefully before choosing a cleaning method and use dry cleaning for fabrics where shrinkage is a risk. We'll tell you our recommended approach before we start.
Can you clean cushion covers with embroidery or beading?
Yes, though embellished covers require individual assessment. We check that the embellishment is secure and advise on the best approach before starting any work.
How often should cushion covers be professionally cleaned?
Once a year is a reasonable guideline for covers in regular use. Covers in rooms with pets, or in households where cushions get heavy daily use, may benefit from more frequent cleaning.
Do you clean cushion covers from sofas, bedrooms and outdoor furniture?
We clean cushion covers from any indoor soft furnishing — sofas, armchairs, window seats, beds and decorative arrangements. Outdoor cushion covers are assessed individually as the fabrics and their cleaning requirements vary widely.
How long does cushion cover cleaning take?
Most covers are ready within three to five working days. Covers with embellishment or requiring special handling may take a little longer. Let us know if you have a deadline.
Do I need to remove the covers before bringing them in?
Yes — bring the covers off the pads. We clean the covers themselves, not the cushion inserts. Most covers unzip without difficulty.
